What is a "Normal" Bowel Movement?

With every new exam I ask the same question...

"How many bowel movements do you have each day? Do you see any mucous, blood, diarrhea or constipation?"

Feces, crap, stools, shit, poop, manure, BM, #2, dung, droppings, and bowel contents are all the same thing. I use all these terms as sometimes my clients don't know what feces or stool is. If I can't communicate with my clients, I can't help them.

Feces contains water, indigestible fiber, undigested food, sloughed off intestinal cells, living and dead bacteria, bile, and worn out red blood cells. A normal stool should be brown to light brown, formed but not hard or too soft, cylindrical but not flattened on any side, fairly bulky and full bodied but not compact, easy to pass, and it shouldn't have an extremely foul smell. Each bowel movement should be in one piece, about the size and shape of a banana being tapered at the end. Sometimes this will not be discernable if the feces breaks up in the toilet. Some people feel that if the body is absorbing all the minerals from the food that the stool will float. Others believe that the stool should sink. I think the important thing is that there are no air bubbles in the stool and that it doesn't drop like a brick in the toilet. It should be somewhere in between.

An occasional deviation from this pattern is acceptable. Any chronic deviation from the above pattern is not healthy and should be dealt with.

It's amazing how many people don't even look at their stools in the toilet. It's so important. Stools can reveal a lot about your health if you learn to read them. Digestion happens. It's a shame that few of us are unable to talk about them without embarrassment. For instance:

o Air or bubbles in the stool can mean that we have a gut or flora imbalance and that gas producing bacteria are overgrown and competing with the healthier flora.

o Alternating bouts of diarrhea and constipation can be cause by irritable bowel syndrome, food allergies, red meat, spices, sugar, alcohol, stress, lack of fiber, irregular bowel habits.

o Color: Stools are usually the color of the food.

o Constipation can occur leading to impaction--the presence in the rectum of a mass of feces too large to pass. Fecal impaction is usually the result of poor bowel habits, a diet with too little liquid and roughage, too much protein and inadequate physical activity.

o Diarrhea, whether acute or chronic, can disrupt the bowel's normal rhythm and lead to irregularity. It can mean that your large intestine is not functioning properly. The large intestine is in charge of removing excess water from the feces. Rule outs can include food poisoning, lactose intolerance, anxiety, stress, too many antacids, antibiotics, parasites like Giardia or Coccidia, Balantidia, Coccidoidiomycosis or other parasites, viruses, bacterial overgrowth, inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome. A healthy bowel will take about a quart and a half and condense it down to 1 cup of stool. That's pretty amazing.

o Frank red blood (obvious bright red bleeding) can be a sign of hemorrhoids, colitis, Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome, colon cancer or be caused from impacted stools passing through the rectum telling us we need to drink more water.

o Horrible smelling stools--too much protein, flora imbalance.

o If the stools are black, tarry and sticky (called melena), this can mean that there is bleeding from the small intestine. These types of stools usually have a distinctive bad odor. If you've ever smelled a dog with Parvo, corona or rotavirus, you know what I mean.

o Light green stools--Too much sugar, fruits or vegetables and not enough grains or salt (or in the case of animals, too much grass)Mucous can reveal diverticulitis and gut inflammation due to allergies or parasites.

o Oily or greasy looking stools that usually float and can be large can mean that your pancreas or small intestine are not functioning well enough and not releasing enough digestive enzymes. Normal stools are about 1% fat. When this percentage increases to about 7%, the stool will look oily and greasy. This is called steatorrhea. High fat meals can cause this to happen but should be temporary.

o Pale or clay colored stools can mean that your gallbladder or liver is not working correctly.

o Pencil thin or ribbon-like stools can mean you have a polyp or growth on the inside of the colon or rectum.

o Presence of food: If the stool breaks up easily and you can see bits and pieces of the food you ate, maybe you are not chewing your food thoroughly enough. This can cause GERD, acid reflux, abdominal bloating and diarrhea.

o Red or magenta stools-- ingestion of beets.

o Very dark stools: Too much red wine, too much salt in the diet, not enough vegetables. Blueberries, Pepto Bismol (the bismuth in it) and iron pills can also be responsible for dark stools.

Normal bowel habits not only improve the quality of life, they help prevent several common diseases--for example, diverticulitis and fecal impaction. Gall stones, appendicitis, colon cancer, hiatal hernia, diabetes, and heart disease have also been related to the quality of bowel movements and the foods that affect them.

Number of bowel movements: Healthy bowel activity is considered one or two movements of moderate size every day. Every other day or once or twice a week bowel movements can harm you because the bowel contents release toxins back into the body through the mucous membranes. You've got to keep that waste moving!

Fecal incontinence (uncontrollable diarrhea) should be dealt with by a professional. Often with this particular symptom (and irritable bowel syndrome) I will pick up a bowel parasite. A bottle or two of Bowel Pathogen Nosode drops does an awesome job most of the time in clearing up these cases.

Healthy bowel habits:

There is usually a time of day when bowel movements are more likely to occur. In anticipation of this time, the patient should participate in activities that stimulate a normal bowel movement. It is also important for the patient to recognize the urge to defecate and to respond right away to that urge. The longer stool sits in the rectum, the more water the rectum will absorb from it, making it harder and more difficult to pass.

The urge to defecate is often strongest in the morning: Just getting up triggers the movement of the large intestine. The stomach also sends a signal when it expands after a meal. This gastrocolic reflex is the reason many people, and especially children, need to go to the bathroom soon after eating. The reflex gets weaker with age, which is one source of constipation problems and the reason why good and consistent bowel habits are helpful.

Laxatives: Some patients are so convinced they need daily laxatives that they are afraid to do without them. It takes time for a changed diet to affect the bowels and for the bowel to regain its normal rhythm. Be patient. Enemas are a better solution.

Healthy bowel movements require ingestion of a large amount of liquids and bulk foods. The patient should drink two to three quarts of liquids every day. Bulk comes from unrefined foods. Oat bran, wheat bran, brown rice, green vegetables, apples, and pears are a few examples of high residue, high fiber foods.

Some patients will benefit from adding bulk preparations of psyllium, but others find that psyllium will cause extreme amounts of gas. For these people, the addition of WHOLE flax seeds (eat without chewing them) and bran will help. And one single 8-ounce cup of coffee in the morning often helps people get a regular bowel movement.

Some Notes on Intestinal Bacteria Replacement: Inside a healthy lower intestine are billions of beneficial intestinal bacteria or microflora. These bacteria are of the Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus bifidus strains and were transferred by breast-feeding into our intestines as newborn infants. The body uses L. acidophilus and L. bifidus in the final stages of digestion reproducing themselves as necessary to keep in total harmony with the body.

When the good bacteria can't keep up, bad bacteria overpopulate the gut to give a gut flora imbalance resulting in lower bowel diseases, gas, diarrhea, IBS, and Crohn's. The devitalizing effect caused by harmful bacteria in the intestine is rarely diagnosed near the beginning of this imbalance. Headaches, skin infections, weakness and constipation can also be symptoms of depleted intestinal bacteria.

What Causes A Gut Flora Imbalance?

o Toxins, especially drugs such as antibiotics and narcotics.

o Severe diarrhea can damage or destroy these beneficial bacteria, allowing harmful bacteria to take over producing by-products like ammonia, purines and ethionine, which can eventually cause colon cancer.

o Fasting can also deplete the beneficial bacteria because large quantities of toxins are dumped from the lymph glands into the colon at the time of the fast. Also during a fast, with certain diets and with eating disorders, there is an absence of foods that the good bacteria thrive on.

o Using enemas also depletes the beneficial bacteria, especially if chlorinated water is used.

To reestablish intestinal bacteria, do a couple enemas with liquid acidophilus or live acidophilus. These products should be stored and purchased refrigerated. Off-the-shelf products are not so effective for replacing gut flora. You can also mix a couple tablespoons of active plain yogurt to your enema mix along with a tablespoon of the liquid acidophilus. Add some warm water, but do not heat the mixture or use chlorinated water. After blending the mixture, pour it into the enema bag. Use less water for these types of enemas (only 1-2 cups) and try to retain the liquid within the colon for ten minutes to allow the beneficial bacteria to pass up through the intestine. This procedure will ensure that a healthy culture will propagate within the intestines.

You can also start adding L. acidophilus and L. bifidus to your foods a day or two before you break a fast. Use repeat dosages as per bottle instructions once a week for about 5 weeks.

FOS (Fructooligosaccharides) are also good for reestablishing gut flora. These are long-chain sugars that feed friendly flora. You can purchase this in concentrated pill form or eat lots of apples, Jerusalem artichokes, or pears. These foods have high amounts of FOS in them.

It's been nine months when we said goodbye to each other as you made the transition into eternity. This morning I decided that it was time to remove what was left behind. Each day I've opened the closet and smelling your scent from the clothes still hanging there. Suits for church, casual clothes worn to work daily, shoes shiny and yes, a pair that needs a coat of polish. Should I polish them for you? No. You've left them behind.

What to do with all these jeans and sweatshirts. How you loved to come home and change into these grubs. Despite being a chemistry instructor, you really had a heart for the earth and this family farm you grew up on. Your gardens of vegetables fed a lot of people here.

Oh yes, and summer time haying season. You would take the John Deere and cut the hay. Two hay rows later, I was on the Co-op with the hay conditioner. Remember the dead skunk that went through the conditioner? You had the biggest grin on your face when you saw me condition that smelly creature. I got you later when it was baled up...it stayed on the field if I recall.

This old red sweatshirt. Tracy loved the game you played with her. You were the "red giant" and she was Voosh-ka-noosh-ka! Both of the kids carry that creative name and game playing gene of yours. "C-Sanish", she'd yell to make the Red Giant disappear.

What's this? Oh my word, it's the suit you wore when we got married 17 years ago. Actually, it's a bit snug now. I was so proud that day with you wearing your black suit, angel white shirt, accented by a gray and black stripped tie. You smiled as I came down the aisle. Your eyes, with those long lashes, encouraged the calming of my beating heart.

I don't have the heart to just stuff these things into a bag; each shirt I carefully fold as if you'll need them tomorrow. You never liked this brown suit. It's almost like new from so little use. Someone will probably like it now. Oh my, there's your leather jacket. How can I let that go? You've worn this jacket since we dated. Is it OK for me to leave this behind? I'll put it aside for now with the wedding suit.

Quickly now, get through this. I can't attach a memory to each piece here, I have so much more to go through that you couldn't take with you. Your dresser is still full. This is easier now, somehow underwear and socks lack an emotional attachment.

Oh! I remember these. I bought them for you on Valentine's Day. Briefs decorated with valentines! Of course, to get you to wear them I had to put ALL of your underwear in the washer on the soak cycle. You were so surprised when you opened the drawer and valentine briefs were the only pair waiting to be worn. That was pay back for the firecracker scare! Wasn't it fun to play like this? So many silly games and tricks we shared. Some thought we were worse than the kids with the antics we could think up.

Your jewelry box holds little treasures. Chris will get the cufflinks and the tie clasp he always like to hold for you when you put on your tie. I'm giving Tracy your wedding ring after I can let it leave my own middle finger. She's too little now anyway.

What's this? I didn't know you still had this picture of me. I gave it to you so long ago it seems. Here's your leather wallet tooled with a trout arched as if coming out of the water. Everyone knows you loved to fish, and the best at the sport in our area.

What have you left behind in this old wallet of yours? Twenty dollar bill, pictures of the kids, one of me, almost all of your drivers licenses, of course your fishing and hunting licenses. Here's your social security card, I'll need that for the insurance and social security office. I really dread to do that now. I guess it means I have to accept the reality of it all.

They say that you leave everything behind. Not quite true. What is left are these tangible things like I'm packing up to give away and to save. You've left behind memories for the kids and I.

What you've taken with you is the essence of your life. It's true, I feel I know where you've gone. I watched you look up to the corner of your hospital room and stretch your arms out to the angel taking you beyond this realm of life. Your soul left so easily, but not without saying, "I love you Maralene."

The road of the past was hard and smooth for the old man, a little dusty too, and early in the morning the old man sat in his easy chair trying to figure out a new short story to write, anyone, on anything would do from the far past-he had been dry for an idea on what to write. Perhaps a story, he said one before he was a soldier, and had traveled far away across the seas, something that provoked his Irish wits. When he was young, before he started all his traveling and something he'd imagine he'd never do again; He looked outside his window; there was the snow caped mountain, "White Mountain," and those snowy mountains alongside White Mountain. Then Sid came to mind, a friend whom he had doubled with when he dated back in his teens. A good old pal, he had died at the early age of nineteen-years old, a car accident, but up to that time, they had a lot of fun together. "Oh, yes" he said aloud, remembering now what lead up to the circumstances at the White Castle Hamburger café... "Quite so," he murmured to himself, picking up his pen, as to start his first sentence... "That's it...!" he concluded, he had it now-the picture of the events, the plot, the theme, the conclusion, although there was no insight to be given out on this so called... narration, more of an account than a unfolding of events, but a risky one, it wouldn't leave him in a light should someone figure out it was more fact than fiction...he remembered:

He rode through the city with his friend Sid in his 1955-dodge his parents had bought for him, through the crowed city he drove, to meet a blind date. It was Friday night. And the moon appeared to him to be rising and falling, he had a few drinks, he was seventeen-years old, they both, Lee and Sid were seventeen-years old. Sid drove outside of the city where there were open fields and hidden roads, Sid with his part time girlfriend Eva, and Lee, with his blind date, Barbara, with her bronze Italian skin, and dark thick hair, they sat still in the backseat.

"Well," said Lee, "do you like what you see or not?" She, Barbara turned a little pale in the face, surprised he was so forthright. Against the side of the car were thick and high trees, they could not be seen from the distant highway (Highway 36).

"Yes," she said, "I like what I see!" He moved her over to the corner of the car, "Will you be uncomfortable here?" he asked.

"I'm fine," she remarked.

"Sid seems not to be wasting any time up front there," said Lee, he was making out with Eva. Lee put his hand on Barb's shoulder.

"You can start kissing me if you want," said Barb, nearly two-years younger than Lee.

He shook his head, "Sure!"

"What did Lee say Barb?" asked Eva.

"That you and Sid started making out already!"

"Isn't he observant!" said Eva.

"How do you like it out here?" asked Sid to Lee, opening up a can of beer.

Lee looked out the side of the car, somewhat blocked by a tree. "Well, I don't mind it I guess," Sid replied-"except it's along ride back if we both get too drunk."

The woods were dark; the road had left the highway about a mile behind them, the radiator was hot and boiling, Sid had to turn the car off, it was fall and a chill was in the air as well as in the car now. Eva looked annoyingly and suspiciously at the sounds the radiator was making, the engine silent now, "I hope we can make it back safely," she said.

"Certainly," Sid said.

Eva wore a short skirt and a loose blouse and a light leather jacket. She leaned forward against Sid, pushed her breasts against him, and smiled. She smiled seemingly on both sides of her face, because it was clear to Lee as she turned the good side toward him. She had a charm and a good side of her face that always smiled, even when she wasn't trying to smile. Her nose was small, and it looked very cold and firm he thought, taking good notice in her.

"You like me don't you Lee?" she asked.

"He adores you, and so do I," said Sid, "now let him and Barb make- out (and she stroked her hair)."

"Tell Lee, Barb we have to go; I think Sid's a misogynist, he took a bite out of my ear!"

"That's an accidental love kiss..." Sid told her.

"Will you shut your mouth and take me home?" she asked. Sid went silent.

"Lee, will you get us out of here?" she was mad.

"Will you stop quarreling; let's go Sid and take them both to their homes, so we can get drunk on our own, in peace and quiet."

Two Weeks Later

Eva called Lee up asked to go out with him and they are now looking about for a place to eat...Lee stops at a White Castle Hamburger Café...

"I'm not Italian, my family and I am from Bucharest," said Eva to Lee as they stopped at an outdoor hamburger place, called 'White Castle.'

"I'm glad I'm with you and not with Sid!" remarked Eva.

"I don't know why you say that?" said Lee.

"He's dull...and irritating!" the young woman said.

"You talking about Sid as dull, he was trying to be with you, what did you expect from him?"

"Lovely place, couldn't you find me a better place to eat?" Lee had ordered several White Castle hamburgers (you know those little things that take three bites and they're gone).

"Oh, no. You eat them, I don't want them." Said Eva, as the hamburgers were brought to the car, and Lee pulled out a few for her.

"Ah," said Lee, to the young woman, "here take at least one, I paid for them, I can't eat them all!"

"No...you don't understand," said Eva.

"You want to pay the bill?" said Lee.

"Oh no, but listen, I want to go home," she said.

"Every time you don't get your way you want to go home," said Lee.

"You can amuse yourself by yourself, I said take me home!"

"Just eat a hamburger or two, and in a little while I'll take you home," said Lee.

"Listen," said Eva, "don't bother to ask me again. I tell you these hamburgers are awful."

Lee took a hamburger out of the bag, handed it to Eva, "Eat it!" he demanded.

"No!" she repeated.

"Well," he said, as he waited with the hamburger in the open palm of his hand for her to take, which she would not take, "Jerk," she called him.

It started to rain, a few cars drove by them watching them quarrel.

"SMASH!-Smack!" the open hamburger in the palm of Lee's hand somehow jumped by impulse out of his hand right smack into her face.

"Well, see," said Lee, "you did eat it...somewhat!"

"Oh, yes...you son...of...! She started to say, holding back the last part of the word.

Finally they both could see eye to eye.

"It's gone now, I'll take you home." The hamburger was all over her face, on her dress and partly on the floor.

"Oh you've been gone a long time," she said in a hateful voice. "I'd walk home but it's raining," she added.

She wiped the remaining parts of the hamburger off her face and skirt, and Lee took her home. The following day, he called Barb up for another date, hoping it would end up better than with Eva.

An outdoor activity is something that everyone needs and should do. Watching to much TV or just sitting inside is boring, unhealthy and has no reward. Many people go outside and walk or jog, but that too is pretty boring and unrewarding. So what can you do outdoors that is both fun and healthy?

Many adults and young adults have forgotten that the best way to exercise outdoors is to play like they did when they were a kid. But how does an adult play outside? The best way is to start a radio control hobby. RC hobbies like airplanes, boats, cars, and helicopters are both fun and very rewarding. Imagine building and then flying your own creation, or ripping across the waves in your own little gas powered boat.

An RC hobby can also give you something fun to do with your kids, who don't exactly always want to hang out with their parents. But trust me; if you are flying a radio controlled jet then they will come running. You will also have something to pass onto your children, like an airplane that both of you built together, or a boat that you and your child have enjoyed many times together.

By far the best RC vehicle that can be purchased is of course an R/C airplane or helicopter. If an airplane is what you are going to go for, then I recommend an Almost Ready to Fly plane or a kit. This will allow you and your kid(s) to put it together with you, giving you something extra to do with them and give them some knowledge of building something. Then after you build it you can fly it with them, which makes the flight twice as rewarding.

Another RC flying toy that is fun would be a remote control helicopter. Radio controlled helicopters are unique because they hover and allow more control from the pilot. They are also harder to master, so for the people who are looking for a quick thrill you might not like it, but other's who have a dedication to it will love it. RC helicopters also offer a neat experience at night since they can hover and can be equipped with lights.

If you want to experience the thrill of a speed boat on the water, but don't have the money to afford a real one, then a radio controlled boat is perfect. With R/C boat engines available in electric or gas powered, a beginner or an expert could operate and maintain a RC boat. This is ideal since you might not always be around but your children want to go outside and have fun with it. A remote control boat is really the easiest, but most rewarding, of all radio control hobbies.

The most popular R/C toy in the world is of course the remote control car or truck. RC cars can be operated by virtually anyone at any age, are easy to maintain and operate and are very inexpensive to own. If you do plan on getting a R/C car or truck, then I recommend an electric powered one to begin with, then gradually progress towards a nitro powered engine. Just to let you know, nitro fuel cars are hard to maintain and require some experience and knowledge prior to operating.

My favorite outdoor activity out of all of them are model rockets. Model rockets are of course not remote controlled (I guess they could be) but none the less they are very fun and should be considered. I love model rockets, and the reason is because they are very realistic and not expensive. The engines that blast them off really shoot out burst of flames and leave a smoke trail behind the rocket, and the rocket's cost around only $20. Very cheap for such a realistic thrill and they are pretty safe to operate.

Dauphin Island and the History of North America's Colonization in Miniature

Dauphin Island, Alabama is a barrier island at the Mouth of Mobile Bay. It is a tourist attraction, the home of around 1,200 people, the site of the Estuarium marine sciences laboratory and a164-acre Audubon Bird Sanctuary. It's a pleasant, pretty and useful place that receives most of its income from tourism. On the face of it one could hardly guess that Dauphin Island bore the name "Massacre Island" for 8 years, or that it was occupied by every major European power in American history at one time or another.

The earliest records of human activity on Dauphin Island are the burial sites of the Native Americans known as the Mound Builders. The Serpentine shell middens on Dauphin's northern shore suggest that this culture had been using the island for 1,000 years before the 1st Europeans arrived in the Americas, possibly occupying it on a seasonal basis, and definitely using it as sacred ground for the honored dead.

Spain got the jump on the rest of the Old World when in came to the America's. Since we attribute the continents "discovery" to that country (even if Columbus is to be taken at his word that he was, in fact, Italian) it is only fitting that Spanish explorer Alonzo Pineda was the 1st European to map the Dauphin Island in 1519. By standards of the time his work is considered incredibly detailed and accurate.

It wasn't until 80 years after Pineda made his map that the next great European colonial power arrived on Dauphin's shores. In 1699 French explorer Pierre Le Moyne, sier d'Iberville, future architect of French Louisiana, was beginning his exploration of the mouth of the Mississippi. He and his men anchored on Dauphin Island and, in a text-book European misreading of Native American culture, mistook the human remains he found there as the aftermath of some savage (or savages') battle or atrocity. Thus the Island received the name "Massacre Island".

Bones or no bones, d'Iberville liked what he saw. Under the French Massacre Island became a settlement, trading-post and, for a time, the capitol of the Louisiana Territory, a.k.a. 2/3rd's of the continental United States. As such, "Massacre Island" began to seem an inappropriate name. In 1707 the island was renamed Dauphin Island in honor of the "Dauphin" of France, the title given to the prince who is the heir to the French throne.

Latter events would suggest "Massacre Island" was a more appropriate name after all. In 1711 pirates raided Dauphin Island, with all the attendant murder, rape and pillage one might expect. In 1717 a massive Hurricane very nearly leveled every structure on the island. Then, horror of horrors, the British arrived.

For the better part of 100 years Dauphin Island was a microcosm of colonial European conflict in the Gulf of Mexico. Great Britain took it from France. Spain took it back from Great Britain. Virtually the only players on the North American field who didn't reclaim it were the Indians. Back and forth it went until 1813, when a still green United States acquired the entirety of Mobile Bay, Dauphin included. The British took the Island one last time, for old times sake, during the War of 1812 (or actually a few month after; communications were very slow in the early 19th century), but after that Dauphin Island has remained thoroughly Alabaman until the present.

Dauphin has seen a great deal of American history unfold, from cultures of the 1st immigrants who came via the Bering Straight, to the earliest efforts of the conquistadors, to the western European scrum over valuable New World real estate. All in all, that's not too shabby for a little strip of land off the edge of Alabama.

I took the plunge! I have pre-ordered mine new Kindle 2 two weeks ago. My new expected Kindle arrives on Tuesday February 24th (according to the shipping tracker). I am already convinced I want now to find the best cover for it. There are several places, also there is a fairly good discussion of the different kinds of covers available, but I am not sure about what's the best.

Now is available a wide variety of Kindle 2 accessories, including new covers from Cole Haan, Patagonia, M-edge, GelaSkins, Vangoddy, Belkin and more.

For example: Cole Haan has many Hand-Woven Leather Covers for Kindle 2 that are indeed stylish, although they are rather pricey. This custom covers, made exclusively in India of hand-stained New Zealand leather.

I should say that they are not for those who would rather have something mass produced in China or for those who don't care to stand out from the crowd or draw attention. They are absolutely beautiful! I figured many might start ordering it. There is a strong chance that you will be quite unique as it is are rather pricey. For those of you who don't know, Cole Haan is amazing and is actually worth the price you would pay for their stuff. I have one of their purses and about 5 pairs of shoes. The purse is the softest thing I've ever touched and the shoes make my feet sing. Seriously, their leather is like butter.

Patagonia Book Case for Kindle 2, is nice, but I think it needs handle, like a wristlet purse.The Case is designed with padded, internal compartments to keep the Kindle 2, the power adapter, the clip light, and any additional accessories tangle-free. Self-locking zipper on a front pocket ensure that contents stay in. Most probably it's may be wonderful for protecting my Kindle 2. But, I still think..

It has a solid front and back construction and can be used as a bookstand for upright, hands-free reading. My friend purchased the red case and I have to say it is VERY nice. It is a really nice soft buttery leather, the smell of leather alone is wonderful, the feel of it in my hands is sensual - I like it a lot, but I would prefer other brand in leather.

As Burberry Prorsum Spring Summer 2011 Fashion Show ended up in the world's "number one fashion Holy Land" - London, fashion watchers might be disappointed this time. The corset has always been a quest to achieve feminine perfection of form. As near as modern knowledge can tell, the corset originated in Crete during the times of Ancient Greece. This predates the birth of Christ by 1000 to 2000 years. Women and young girls from Ancient Greece were also bound in leather or wool corsets to slim the body. Ancient Greeks were very interested in perfection of the human form. Their many statues were an attempt to achieve this visual perfection.

In Medieval times, women also wore corsets, though they were mainly reserved for the limited upper class. At this time they were called stays, and they were designed to flatten a woman's torso rather then accentuate her curves. The heavy religious atmosphere spoke out against physical desires, so corsets acted to lessen the male desire for a woman by lessening her physical appeal.

In the Victorian Period, some several hundred years later, corsets flourished in main stream culture as the epitome of female beauty. Anyone who was anyone was wearing a corset to look their best any day of the week. Often times even men were wearing corsets to encourage proper posture. In the recent past, we've seen corsets reappearing in our world from the depths of fetish obscurity.

The corset has a rich and very long history. People all over the world have been using the corset to achieve feminine perfection of form. With luck, this century old tradition will continue with your help.

Many companies are selling corsets and bustiers online, and more people are getting confused about what size they should be ordering. It gets even worse when you order your corset and it doesn't fit - the site doesn't accept returns on these items in most cases. Many times, going in to get sized in person isn't an option. I've had the wonderful opportunity to work in store helping people just like you find the right fit. It's easy to go into a specialty shop and try on corsets, but I know that isn't always possible.

For those of you who don't have that option, I'm here to help you make the right decision so you can buy a corset that will fit you properly the first time around. I've been wearing and making my own corsets for 5 years now. So, have no fear, I know my stuff.

There are many questions people ask when first considering purchasing a corset. These are the most common:

How do I measure my size?
How do I know if it will fit?

I am here to answer those questions for you. I will provide an easy step by step method for you to know for certain if you'll be buying a corset that will fit. The simple fact of the matter is that if you have the right measurements your corset will fit.

You will need:

- Sewer's Measuring Tape
- String or Yarn
- Paper and Pen

Step 1 - Don't lie to yourself. You have your own size, and there's nothing wrong with that. My caution is to see yourself, and your measurements, exactly as they are. Don't change anything. A corset that is too small can hurt when worn too tight, and a corset that is too big won't shape your body properly.

Step 2 - I'd like you to find your pen and paper. Make a list on your paper: bust, bra line, waist, lower waist, hips. If it will help you to visualize these areas feel free to draw a female torso beside your list. Total anatomical correctness isn't a must here.

Step 3 - Find or purchase a sewer's measuring tape and your string or yarn. A carpenter's measuring tape will give you more problems, and I wouldn't recommend them. Wrap the string around your waist and hold it loosely between your fingers. Now I'd like you to move around a bit. Bend from side to side until the string settles at your waist. Once it has, measure the string out. This will be your waist measurement. Jot it down on your list.

Step 4 - Often times it's easier to have a friend or relative measure for you. Have your measuring tape ready, and we're going to measure your bust line. The bust is the length around and over your breasts. Start at the front, and try not to let the measuring tape sag down. We want this to be as level as possible. When you're done, jot down your measurement beside bust.

Step 5 - Using your measuring tape, we're going to measure the area right beneath your breasts - the bra line. Again, take care to not let the tape slide down your back. When you're done, jot the measurement down.

Step 6 - The lower waist measure is more for larger women. If you're smaller set, you may skip this step. Do you remember about where your waist was? We want to measure about two inches below that, but we don't want to omit our bellies. I know it can be tempting, but if you're getting custom work done online, this measure can be very important. Jot down the number when you're done.

Step 7 - This is our last measurement. Find where your hip bones are, and just measure all the way around. Then just write down the number.

Step 8 - Guess what? You're all done. This is normally all you'll need to find a nice fitting corset.

Most sites will size their corsets primarily by waist. The mark of a decent site is one that will tell you the bust, waist, and hip measurements. As I've said before, you'll need all the measurements for custom work. Once you've found a site with a corset you like, all you need to do is check the sizes. Every site should have a size chart of some sort.

Generally speaking, your corset size will be 2 inches less then your waist measurement. If you're a larger woman, like myself, 4 inches less then your waist size should still make for a nice fit. Ideally, when you've laced up your corset, there should be 1-4 inches of your back still exposed.

I have a few more suggestions for you before we part company. First, shorter women, I would suggest staying away from the longer corsets out there. They tend to make us look even shorter. Taller women, you'd likely want to be looking into buying the longer corsets. For larger women, like myself, a longer corset is a must for covering our bellies. Shorter corsets can result in random bulging where we don't want it.

The worst thing you can do while tightening a corset is jerking forcefully. Do not let anyone helping you treat your corset in this manner. It will severely stress the seams, and it could also cause you harm. I know you may have watched some movies with people yanking on the laces and women bracing themselves against any manner of object. This isn't the way to lace a corset. Trust me, if you want your corset to last, treat it and your body, with some respect. Above all, enjoy your corset. It's a worth while investment.

About three years ago, when my baseball glove repair service (volunteer!) was kicking in, I came across a classic example of how you can repair a baseball glove that most people would consider trashed and have it end up looking ten years younger.

I was watching one of the coaches throwing BP and he was using probably one of the worst gloves I've ever seen someone use. He could only catch the ball right in the palm, basically, because just about all of the finger lacing was broken or gone and the glove was really just flopping around. It was a little stupid looking, but he'd been using it like this for a while so no one really thought about it.

After he was done throwing, he threw the glove down on one of the bat bags and went to get something to drink. I couldn't resist so I picked the glove up. I just had to give it a look. It was an another old Rawlings from the early 80's...a lefty.

I gave it a quick inspection and realized that this glove had a ton of potential. Below are some important inspection tips that I use to help determine if a glove is really still good. Here's what I saw.

Although the glove was extremely dry, one of the driest I had yet seen, there were no parts of the leather that were extremely cracked, very hard or looked rotted out.

Although most of the lacing was broken or missing, the "eyelets" (the metal rings where the leather laces go through) were in good shape and did not have rips in the leather where they were attached. The other leather holes were in equally good shape.

And last, it was, of course, just a little dirty and dusty...years of that, really.

And that's it! That's all that was wrong with the glove. I knew this was going to look cool when it was done.

When the coach came back I asked him if he wanted me to see if I could make his glove a little more useful. (didn't want to make any great promises yet). He kind of laughed, but said, "Go 'head, if you want." I did, and I took the glove home.

That night I cleaned it up, got all of the dirt off. The next day I replaced all of the lacing...full glove. I then conditioned it. The glove was so dry it was sucking up conditioner like crazy. Even to this day, it holds the record for me. I let it dry for two more days. I couldn't believe how it now looked and felt.

When I gave the glove back to him four days later, I just tossed it at him as he walked toward me. He caught it and I could tell as he looked at the glove that he didn't really recognize it. When he realized that it was the old High School glove that he used years ago, he just blurted out some stuff that I won't repeat here, but you can guess. In any case, he was shocked at how good the glove looked.

It now had all new lacing. The color was totally different because the leather was so dry before that it was much lighter than what it originally was. The glove was now a dark tan. The leather was soft and flexible. It really looked and felt great. The guy was very happy with the glove and I could tell he couldn't believe that it could look and feel like that again. Two years later I saw the glove laying in a bat bag again. I picked it up and again inspected it. It still looked great, even two years later. That's good stuff!

This is just one glove out of many that I repaired with similar results. This one probably had the most dramatic results, though. With a little baseball glove repair skills under your belt you can make a lot of gloves new again and make a lot of kids and parents happy. Just remember, as a quick inspection of a glove that needs repair, look for the following:

Check the leather. Make sure it's just dirty and dry and has no major damage.

Check the eyelets and other leather holes. There shouldn't be large tears around eyelets or big rips in other leather holes.

Get an idea of what lacing job lies ahead of you.

With a little practice, you can repair and restore many gloves. You'll be a sought after person after a while if word gets out that you can repair gloves. It's cool, though, when a little kid is smiling and thanks you for restoring his favorite glove...and you can tell that he truly means it.

So before you throw an older glove out, or see someone giving up on their glove, take a look at it...give it a little inspection and see if you can work some magic too.

How To Use Tradeshow Gimmicks To Build Your Business Big

People attend industry tradeshows for numerous reasons. Whether you go and set up as an exhibitor or sign up to visit the vendors, everyone has their own motives for checking out the show. Interestingly enough, some individuals just want to get away from the office for a while and make it a "working" vacation! This is true for exhibitors as well as buyers, either way it becomes a business write off!!

I've attended industry shows as a buyer and as an exhibitor off and on over the last twenty years. In the beginning most of my focus was towards the Awards & Engraving arena. Through the years it became quite obvious that this was a rather small industry, as compared to some "sister" type industries such as; screen printing, apparel or sign business type shows. A great deal of my time over the last decade has been spent exhibiting in the larger arenas.

As an exhibitor, I've had several different outcomes in mind while at the show; including building from those experiences once back at the home office. Seems as if I've done it all at one time or another. Heck, one year I even dressed up as "Logo Man" (a take off of Batman), wore the cape and the whole nine yards! All this to stir up interest in our newest software release titled, LogoBahn. It was the hottest thing around and won first place that year for best technology development!

Now I'm not suggesting you need to dress up in some goofy outfit in order to have a successful tradeshow but I do encourage you to think outside the box. One year our company joined forces with four other well know businesses. We called ourselves the Texas Connection, appropriately named due to our companies were all located in the state of Texas. We placed advertisements in popular industry magazines, informing of our FREE GRAND PRIZE give away, at the next Las Vegas International Tradeshow. In addition to the space ads, each company sent out two post card mailings prior to the show date. We set up a "punch card" to be handed out to each registered individual as they entered the tradeshow exhibit hall.

Each of us had a special die punch with different emblems. We utilized this punch card to indicate that an individual had physically stopped by our booth. Once a person had all five company marks punched, they would then drop it into a centrally located hopper (raffle bin). On the last day of the show just before the end of the day, we gathered around to draw out the winning attendee's card. It was a smash hit, a true winner for all five of us as exhibiter's in many different ways.

Our grand prize that year was a big screen TV costing around $1500. This was a small price to pay considering we shared in the purchase of the television set. We were at the forefront of peoples mind long after the show had ended and many asked what we were going to be giving away at the next event!

Here's the real beauty of the whole deal. As I mentioned earlier there are several different outcomes each exhibitor has while attending an industry tradeshow. Too many in fact to cover in this one article but I want to share one of the better results we experienced as a company. It's so cool and tailor made for anyone in sales to implement this concept in your business. Whether you are selling a product line or a service this gives you a great follow up plan, as well as a great lead in for your sales force.

Here it is! Remember the punch card each individual was required to have marked by the participating exhibitors? Well, once they approach your booth and ask for their card to be punched, hand them ANOTHER CARD to be filled in while they are getting their card marked by you. It's a good idea to have another incentive to benefit the person filling out the additional card. Something small, keep it simple. We used an additional giveaway item of our own. A portable DVD player, at the time was only $40 and we shipped it to our winning visitor (or handed it to them if they were present). A mini raffle of our own!

This accomplishes two specific things:

1 - They are held "captive" in front of you to fill out their information, allowing you time to "pitch" your deal to them. Other wise, they will simply get their card punched and move on down the aisle!

2 - This "other card" will now become your personal LEAD CARD to return back to the home office. You can ask pertinent information on this lead card to enable your sales people to target the specific needs of each individual.

Example:

If your item is a software program, you may need to know certain "facts" before pitching your product. Facts such as, what type of computer is used, what version of operating system, email address, do you have a website, do you use any other type of drawing software, if so what kind, etc.

The options are truly endless and become a valuable source of knowledge for your sales team. Imagine this, now instead of waiting on the tradeshow organization to send you the show attendee's list or print out the "standard" name, address, zip, phone, etc information. You now have specific FACT FINDING answers to your need to know questions without having to call and ask over the phone. Your sales people are truly armed with solid info that allows the to build rapport with their prospects. Making the "sales call" a much warmer, more friendly invitation to your newfound friend.

Remember, no one likes to be sold but we all like to buy. It's been reported that people prefer to buy from a friend and NOT a stranger. These types of fact-finding questions create great lead-ins, enabling you to get from stranger to friend much faster. Let's face it, when you call on a prospect and you all ready having working knowledge of who they are, what they are doing and how they may be doing it ... it simply makes them feel more comfortable. Not your typical sales call!

We all know most people buy on emotion and later back it up with logic. Think about it, what about that last car you bought? Did you have to have the leather seats with the automatic windows and door locks? Not to mention the DVD player and the navigation system! Okay, Okay ... I realize you're the exception, that's why I wrote ... MOST PEOPLE.

I trust this article will benefit those of you who exhibit at tradeshows. The above ideas are just a few that we've experienced over the years and found to have successful results. I titled this article with the word "gimmicks" in it, not necessarily implying these are gimmicks but rather "nifty ideas" in order to create a more successful outcome from your next tradeshow.

How to Refill Your Laser Printer Toner Cartridge

Did you know that you could refill your laser printer toner cartridge? I recently discovered that it is both a quick and simple procedure. Most toner cartridges are manufactured to a very high standard enabling them to be used time and time again. Unfortunately the manufacturers have discovered that people refilling their toner cartridges directly reduces their profits so they now actively discourage the practice.

Until recent years you would find a visible refill cap on your laser printer toner cartridge - open this, pour in some replacement ink and the cartridge was as good as new. Some toner cartridges still have this refill cap but many printer companies have removed it to discourage refilling. Fortunately you can buy an inexpensive kit to create your own hole in the cartridge to pour the replacement toner in - extremely easy to use and takes about two minutes.

Most kits accomplish this by supplying a small soldering iron with an attachment on the end to create the hole on your laser printer toner cartridge. Simply let the soldering iron heat up and press the attachment onto the cartridge - it creates a hole which can be sealed using a supplied plastic cap. After doing this you can refill the toner cartridge as often as you like. The advantage of this system is that no working parts of the cartridge are touched - so there is no chance of damaging anything.

My first attempt at this was on Lexmark C500 Printer cartridge - I bought a kit (about £10/20$) which contained all I needed to refill my cartridge and bottles of replacement toner ink. I laid everything out (you should put a sheet down or do this in the open air) - the main danger is spilling the ink I guess but if you put down paper or sheets and take your time you should be fine. You let the soldering iron heat up - in my kit there was an egg timer to make sure it had! When the time was up I placed the end against the laser printer toner cartridge and it made a hole in the side of the cartridge.

Next you have to shake the replacement toner ink - although powder it is so fine that it appears as a liquid. Carefully pour the toner ink into the cartridge through the hole you created (the bottle has a pouring lip to make this easier) then seal up the hole with one of the supplied plastic plugs. That's basically it - the only danger I can see is spilling the ink but if you're careful you should be ok.

I did the first one in about 15 minutes and 5 minutes for the other laser printer toner cartridges - the cost was approximately 37% of a new set of cartridges but I still have loads of toner left in the bottles so that will fall further.

Obviously the other parts of the cartridge will eventually fail - but you should be ok to refill each cartridge a few times. Every time you do refill your laser printer toner cartridge you are saving a significant amount of money and reducing the amount of landfill. Also imagine the environmental costs that are being saved - nearly 2 liters of oil are required to produce a new cartridge - this is also saved each time you refill. In another cost cutting initiative Wal-Mart's marketing team ran a very creative TV commercial during the second quarter of this year. In the commercial a Wal-Mart truck driver states that their "Green Initiatives" of reducing empty miles and consolidating shipments were a major reason Wal-Mart was able to roll back prices for the consumer. A very powerful message because most people do not associate "green initiatives" with cost savings. Many other corporations have implemented cost savings "Green Initiatives". For example, Kraft Foods took on a huge green supply chain initiative when it implemented an environmental effort by taking 50 Million truck miles out of their distribution network. Pepsi's supply chain executives from their four major business units are accountable for defining and driving the company's environmental goals which include reducing water consumption by 20% and fuel consumption by 25% by the year 2015.

PepsiCo works with each of its 210 national carriers to score and track mileage efficiency and CO2 emissions per mile. One PepsiCo unit installed shut-off equipment on tractors to prevent idling for more than five minutes. This process alone is saving about 17,500 gallons of fuel annually.

The company is also expanding its use of intermodal transportation and is building alliances with other shippers. They're looking for partners to fill up boxcars to take trucks off the road because rail transportation is more efficient from a fuel consumption and emissions standpoint. Do you think Warren Buffet knew something about these efficiencies when he purchased the BNSF Railroad a few months back!

It is clear the major shippers are driving these environmental processes with their freight carrier partners. Therefore the carriers are being forced into these green initiatives whether they like it or not.

On the carrier front, UPS has more than 100,000 delivery trucks on the road each day. They travel more than 1.3 billion miles annually and deliver billions of packages, combusting millions of gallons of fuel each year. UPS' Green Fleet today contains over 2000 vans running on everything from Compressed Natural Gas to Electricity. The CNG vans shave 15% in fuel costs over the former diesel fuel powered engines.

Recently UPS added 200 new Hybrid/Electric vehicles to its Green Fleet. The combined fuel savings for these 200 vehicles alone is equivalent to saving 176,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year.

UPS' Package Flow Technology optimizes the routes for every package before it is loaded onto a delivery vehicle. Since its inception this technology has eliminated 100 million miles driven.

UPS' Delivery Information Acquisition Devices (DIAD's), which electronically records delivery information, saves over 89 million sheets of paper each year, the equivalent of 7,308 trees annually.

UPS and FedEx who combined operate over 150,000 plus delivery vehicles are looking into a variety of cleaner technologies including diesel-electric hybrids, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. They're doing this to satisfy Washington's push to cut emissions since trucks produce more than 30% of urban smog. Don't let anyone fool you; in addition to the Green Effect the biggest motivator is cost savings!

The numbers are beginning to add up. JD Powers and Associates estimates there are more than 500,000 hybrid vehicles on the road today with 40% of them trucks.

YRC Worldwide, one of the nation's largest LTL carriers, is aggressively addressing Green House Gas reduction strategies by limiting truck speeds to 62 MPH; implementing extensive use of intermodal services with railroads; setting limits on daily truck idling and enforcing tire pressure inflation and monitoring programs.

YRC has also recently introduced the Green Balance Calculator to measure a company's emissions and voluntarily offset the carbon footprint of its shipments. The calculator evaluates eight transportation activities that produce carbon emissions, among them, fuel usage, rail miles, air miles, and other factors.

YRC has taken direct aim at the airfreight industry. Airfreight tends to be very expensive and less environmentally friendly than ground transportation. A shipper might consider using YRC's or other carriers' expedited ground service which would reduce costs and carbon emissions. For example, shipments that are picked up on Thursday and Friday in California, and are delivered in New York City on the following Monday. Just think of the cost savings this change alone would bring along with its carbon reduction initiative.

Car travel games are a tradition wherever families take vacations or long trips by automobile. Long drives are always more tolerable with some diversion or entertainment, and reading might not be the best choice, at least for the driver. Why not try some games that everyone in the car can play?

"Blue Car" Travel Games

These are travel classics. Each person guesses how many blue cars will pass in the next ten miles or ten minutes. Of course it can be red cars, or trucks, or whatever everyone agrees to. By the way, it's considered bad form for the driver to slow down, letting more cars pass, so his guess will be the closest.

Another classic travel game involves the alphabet. Everyone tries to spot something starting with an "a", and be the first to call it out ("apple tree!"). Since the Qs and Xes are difficult, they can be skipped. The person with the most "firsts," is the winner.

Educational Travel Games

These are car games that get you thinking, learning something, or at least showing off what you know. In one game, the driver, or another designated host, asks questions like "At what temperature does water boil?" or "What is the Capital of Columbia?" or "If sales tax is 7.6%, what's the total cost of a sweater priced at $22?" If you want the kids to love this one, pay twenty-five cents for each right answer.

In another car travel game, someone looks out the window and randomly selects an object. Everyone in the car then tries to imagine a creative way to make money with it. Overpasses become places to advertise, cows are rented out, and a truck becomes a traveling discotheque.

Other Car Travel Games

Turn on the radio and you can have a game in which everyone tries to be the first to call out the name of the artist when a song starts. You can change the station, so you don't have to wait through a whole song to continue the contest.

In another car radio game, each person in the car chooses a word. Then you turn on the radio. The person whose word is spoken (or sung) first on the radio is the winner.

Finally, have one person in the car start a story with a sentence or two. Each person in turn adds a line to the story. This can get personal, but usually creates a story that has everyone laughing.
